Two of our trained women are in the

refugee camps at the Chad-Darfur border talking to women and men about civil society and the need to empower women to participate in the decision-making machinery. They have already held successful meetings but the work is ongoing and they are now training local trainers to advance the work. Watch this space!

My first training workshop in a displaced persons camp near Nyala in August 2008

I found that many women were keen to participate. I trained 12 leading women how to empower others and each in turn trained another group of 12 women. The enthusiasm and participation has bee beyond every  body’s expectations.

Furthermore, I used the workshop opportunity to meet more women to discuss issues that they do all the work but the men may call the decisions. Most importantly, I encouraged the most outspoken women to become community leaders and to involve others to develop a vision of a future with human and civil rights for women in Darfur.

These workshops would not have been possible without the tremendous efforts of my assistant guide, Dr. M who helped me get the permits from the security forces who control the camps.

This is a break-through for me. I am very happy  that  the workshops took place and they will keep me informed of their progress.
